Usha Vance Is Making Maternity Fashion Hot Again

Pictures emerged this week of J.D. and Usha Vance traveling to Hungary together. Upon their arrival, Usha disembarked Air Force Two at her husband’s side, showcasing a stunning lilac silk skirt, a matching vintage sweater, and the most adorable baby bump — their fourth child due in just a few months.

Video footage shows Usha discreetly cradling her unborn baby and beaming after landing for their two-day stay. During the visit, the vice president met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbàn and supported the Trump ally’s reelection campaign.

This is the second time a sitting second lady has been pregnant while her husband is in office.

Fashion and beauty outlet Glam correctly noted that, with the outfit, the second lady made a “stunning case for lilac as spring 2026’s standout hue.”

“Monochrome outfits are notorious for falling flat if there’s not really a clear and cohesive vision, but the attorney-turned-second lady completely avoided that trap by mixing and matching materials and texture,” Glam’s Dami Kim wrote. “The shimmering silk slip was luminous and acted as the perfect anchor piece for the ensemble, while the matte knit sweater quieted the overall aesthetic to make it appropriate for the occasion.”

The couple was also photographed before departing on the trip, where Usha was seen in another chic spring outfit — a classic collared, pastel-striped shirtdress paired with white heels. This was what she sported at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll earlier that day.

Throughout her time in the Trump world, Usha Vance has consistently, much like Melania Trump, made headlines for her fashion choices. While the first lady’s looks are undeniably sharp and regal, the second lady has noticeably opted for simplicity in how she dresses. She sometimes even catches flak for her more laid-back or seemingly incohesive looks. However, as Usha Vance navigates the demanding world of Washington fashion, there is something refreshing about how her most iconic statement pieces tend to showcase her natural beauty and disposition without begging for attention.

Her reserved demeanor has come across in her outfit choices throughout her pregnancy as well, including the aforementioned lilac ensemble. Usha admitted in a recent interview that she’s understandably used to being even more laid back in her clothing choices while pregnant, but has adapted to the demands of being the second lady.

“There are some differences, obviously. I have to dress up a lot more,” she said. “[In] my last pregnancy, there were a lot of sweatpants.”

Usha’s fashion sense seems to reflect how she approaches her role in the Trump administration. Her position is not an outspoken one, but her quiet steadiness both at her husband’s side and as a mother is notable. Although being second lady of the United States may not have been what she expected, she is clearly willing to sacrifice her own comfort and expectations for the sake of her husband, his role, and their marriage. However, even while embracing the “rollercoaster” of this life transition, the couple has apparently also found ways to maintain some sense of normalcy and protect their children from the constant spotlight.

All of this paints a picture of Usha as a confident, accomplished, family-oriented woman who is not desperate for public validation, even amid her initiatives as second lady. She does not pander to the whims of onlookers or obsessively talk about herself to push an agenda.

Usha’s demeanor starkly contrasts with the likes of political wives such as former First Lady Michelle Obama or Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the first lady (er, “first partner“) of California. Michelle Obama has famously disparaged her husband and overshared about their marriage. Jennifer Newsom recently made headlines after she bragged about making her sons play with dolls so that they become better feminists.

Compare this with how Usha navigated a March NBC interview, in which she was not-so-subtly baited to publicly disagree with her husband.

“I wonder if you feel fully comfortable in the universe that you’re in now,” NBC’s Kate Snow said, to which Usha quietly replied, “What do you mean, I’m curious?”

Snow unsurprisingly clarified she was referring to the “political universe” Usha was in.

“Well, I do feel very comfortable in that no one has ever asked me to engage in any kind of litmus test on anything, and I feel very comfortable in that world. I don’t feel like I have to walk around pretending anything of any sort,” the second lady said. “The expectation is that [J.D. and I] are going to be open-minded and have a conversation, and that I’ll provide meaningful input from … the perspective of someone who loves him and wants him to succeed.”

Usha Vance is making maternity fashion hot again, not just with her pastel spring fits, but with how these ensembles showcase her natural excitement to become a mother for the fourth time — with a husband she steadfastly respects and supports.
