OPINION: Protests vs. Proficiency: Time to go back to the basics

As I see it, I’m Andy Parish.

The La Crosse Area Public Schools are making headlines yet again. Students several weeks ago walked out to protest immigration enforcement, and recently an educator flew to D.C., on a school day, in the hopes of going TikTok viral, bird dogging, Congressman Derek Van Orden.

Now, called me old fashioned, but I thought school was a place of learning, and according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, our kids are not learning.

Only 22.8% of students at Central High School are proficient in both math and reading. At Logan, that number is only 22.5%.

Before we create the next generation of edu-activists, can we create a generation that can, I don’t know, read, maybe do a little bit of math and compete in the real world.

Public education is supposed to prepare children for their future lives, not turn them into the next generation of professional protesters. It’s time we demand we go back to the basics, and stick with it of reading, writing and arithmetic.
