OPINION: Your Money, Their Monopoly: The La Crosse Common Council’s $2 Million Train Wreck

|March 5, 2026|Andy Parrish|Source: www.wizmnews.com

As I see it, I’m Andy Parish.

Recently, I was asked what I thought about through the La Crosse Common Council, considering spending two million – of your dollars, to buy a private business. I didn’t even know where to start with that train wreck, so I’m going to start with the inherent conflict of interest.

Apparently, nobody at City Hall understands that government would be stepping in and competing directly with our private businesses, the very businesses that the government regulates licenses and taxes.

That’s like letting the referee suit up and play quarterback for just one of the two teams.

Better yet, it’s like letting the majority party count the ballots every time there’s an election.

When the same entity writes the rules and forces the rules and then enters the game itself, public trust is gone. Fairness folks isn’t about outcomes, it’s about structure and competition.

Government should never be both the umpire and the competitor. That’s not free enterprises. That’s government stacking the deck. And ultimately, you and I are the ones who pay the price.

As I see it, I’m Andy Parish.
