OPINION: The Public Education Industrial Complex: Putting Bureaucracy Before Parents

As I see it, I’m Andy Parish.

Anti-school choice activists claim your property taxes are going up because of the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program. That’s a terrifying story, and it would be if it weren’t for those pesky little things called facts.

The reality is this, not a dime of your property taxes goes to a voucher school. They are state-funded. The real culprit is the ‘Public Education Industrial Complex’. Commonsense says when your revenue drops, your expenses should drop as well. But in this bureaucracy, when a child leaves, they don’t adjust the budget or improve the product.

They simply blame private schools and then raise your taxes. To the system, your kid isn’t a student. They’re a ‘revenue unit’ on legs. And public schools want all the revenue units.

Instead of competing for your business with better outcomes, they pivot to an absurd logic that having fewer students means you need a larger budget. And they’re using your tax bill as a high interest safety net for their own inefficiency.

As I See it, I’m Andy Parrish.
